He advocated for their freedom and instead supported the use of African American slaves, so in a way he protected them. He felt bad for them and wanted to do his best to fight for them. Las Casas witnessed a massacre of poorly armed natives, a scene he would never forget. He traveled around the island a great deal and was able to see the deplorable conditions in which the natives lived. After that he decided it was his duty to help.
