The Opium conflicts were fought in China in the 19th century between the Qing dynasty and the western countries. The first war was between China and Great Britain between 1839 – 42 and the second war escalated between 1856-60. The second war was between Great Britain and France against China.  

When the war ended, China was asked to make payments as indemnity to the British governments and their merchants.
