Recently, political leaders have made efforts to reform the US immigration system, igniting fierce debate. Reform can mean opening the immigration system for a freer flow of people, or restricting immigration to smaller numbers, depending on a person’s perspective. Read this argument for making immigration more open and this argument for restricting immigration. In your own words, summarize each side’s argument in two to three sentences.

Open Immigration: The majority of economic literature has long-pointed to the fact that when workers work legally, they earn more and spend more, thereby growing the economy and expanding the labor market. Their tax contributions also increase and positively impact both state and federal coffers. U.S. Citizen and lawful permanent resident children will remain unified with their parents.

Restricted Immigration: Allowing immigrants to come into the U.S. freely would allow the economy to decrease. Also the president can not grant immigrants the permission to come into the country without congress allowing it. The evidence that illegal immigration and mass immigration are harming our country is overwhelming and irrefutable. Congestion, environment, crime, health care, education — the costs are too high for the American family to continue to bear.
