The expedition revealed what the West was like; it opened a new territory for the United States (since colonies were settled among the East). They encountered new terrain such as prairies, rolling hills, mountains, and waterfalls. They also came into contact with different Indians including the Lakota Sioux, Mandan, Shoshone, and Nez Perce. A lot of other information was gathered (minerals, climate, plants, animals, birds, and of course, the idea of Manifest Destiny -- to get to the Pacific Ocean).
