A prospector is a specialist in looking for mineral deposits. There are pros and cons of having this profession in the oil industry.

Explanation:

Prospectors were heavily prized and wanted int he time of the discovery of oil in various parts of  the world as they were the ones that were finding the resourceful and then telling the companies who would then dig it up and find the mineral to sell it.

They were also becoming very powerful due to this.

The Pro was that they were dedicated to finding new places to get oil while The con was that they were not willing to find loyalty in the same company they worked for.  They could be lobbied and created internal competition

A prospector is someone who is always looking ahead for new opportunities for success. Typically, prospectors are trying to find the next big thing that will make them lots of money. Gold prospectors searched for gold and oil prospectors looked for oil. Prospectors had to take chances, but they took good chances. They usually had to put a lot of money into a project in hopes of making much more in return. Some of the money was their own, and some of it was from other investors, who had to be paid back whether the prospectors made money or not. Good prospectors did their research. Many prospectors were either unprepared or unlucky. While Texas has many successful oil fields, there were just as many that were found dry. Some prospectors lost a little money, some lost a lot. A few struck it rich.

in his book, the riddle of the rosetta stone, james giblin talks about how there was a young british polymath and physician named thomas young who made a lot of advances on the deciphering of the rosetta stone. he says that even though young made a lot of mistakes because he was working under false assumptions, he also made huge contributions like deciphering three out of the seven symbols (more than anyone else before him). young published his findings and continued his good work but he wasn't able to progress much further due to some unfavorable situations, he still laid the basis for many other scholars and of course for the man who has been generally known to have deciphered it, jean-françois champollion
