Newly gained Southwestern territories could make their own decision about whether to enter as a free or slave state. California would enter the Union as a free state. The Fugitive Slave Act was passed. The U.S. government would end the slave trade, but allow slavery to continue. New Mexico land would no longer be part of Texas.
