Before FDR and the New Deal, the government was Republican. Republicans believed in letting the economy sort itself out (laissez-faire). FDR, however, was a Democrat. He believed in big government and heavy regulations. With the New Deal programs, suddenly everything was being regulated by the government, including people's lives. An example of this is the Social Security Act. The SSA created old-age benefits, benefits for those in accidents. and aid to struggling families.
