By 1864, the Confederacy had a solid advantage over Union troops and was poised to win the war.

The Confederates were able to win the Civil War because of the following advantages they had over the Union troops:

1. Knowledge of their terrain and land: Defending their own was made easier for them since they knew everywhere.

2. Skilled Troops: The confederate was focused in tactical training and arms. They used this to their advantage.

3. Sense of Pride: This is because what was on their mindset was that they were actually defending their own homes. Perhaps this was the level of confidence and unity lacking from the north.

The Civil War started when promised by Abraham Lincoln to stop slavery within the southern territories. The south weren't ready to take part in the move but rather wanted to move away for the northern states.

However, Lincoln took a quick step to take action to avoid making the United States a band of disgruntled and fragmented countries.
