The major difference between life in the Roman Republic and life in the Roman empire was that while the citizens enjoyed more freedom and liberty in the republic, they enjoyed limited rights and freedom in the empire because the emperor was the commander, under whose whims and caprices everyone must subject him or herself. For instance, in the republic, the wealthy few or those that fall into the patrician class who had climbed the social ladder enjoyed a life of luxury and affluence, however, the advent of the empire regime curtailed these rights.
