How did the roles of women change during the Civil War?

Before the Civil War, many women would have just stayed home and taken care of the house and children. Although some were still doing this, many also started helping with war activities due to the sense of patriotism.

Some women were making clothes, food, and medical supplies for soldiers. They did not necessarily get hands on but were still very vital. Many slaves were also helping to make war goods for soldiers, often being told by their masters.

On the battlefield, women would help as nurses and aiding to wounded soldiers, but along with this, some women would actually fight on the battlefield as well.

Although women were not directly allowed in war, many would disguise as men to help the country. Many women felt the need to help the war effort by fighting and the only choice was to disguise themselves.
