Battle of Antietam is also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg and was faught during the American civil war between the Union States and the Confederacy states. It was faught on September 17, 1862. The battle was not won by the two sides but the Confederacy states of America was the first to withdraw it troops so it is widely know as a strategic Victory for the Union. Both sides lost a combined total of 22,720 casualties in a single day.

The Battle of Antietam is considered a turning point of the war and a victory for the Union because it ended the strategic campaign of General Lee's of the Confederacy states who invaded the Union territory and it further encourage the Union desire to win the civil war. It also make way for President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which freed more than 3.5 million slaves on September 22, 1862.

The battle was considered the bloodiest one in US history which lead to the death of many Americans soldiers including top generals. The battle was also a single day war, the war which lead to the death of nearly 23,000 men was referred to as the turning point because it enforced more actions from the Union led Abraham Lincoln.
