Sewing is a rather time consuming process even now, but modern technology makes it go faster and easier. Back in the 1700s you were either sewing by hand or with one of these ancient looking sewing machines. They were fairly difficult to operate and that sadly affected the speed of sewing. Sewing by hand was slower but wasn't as accurate as using a machine. Human error could easily ruin ones work.
