Passage For thirteen years. I was part of a nomadic community of people who "garage" a car on the streets of
Manhattan. The rhythms of parking dictated my work schedule, my leisure time--my life. I had to wait in my
car at least an hour before alternate-side parking began. There I would eat breakfast, read novels, write
letters, or listen to music. But sometimes I would just think quietly by myself before the day began to hustle
and the crowds began to bustle to and fro. These were the times I treasured most, when personal rewards
outweighed the inconvenience of the city
