Why did Americans used the language of freedom when discussing foreign policy

Roosevelt- "Speak softly and carry a big stick," believed in being more of an international police power than promoting American ideals.

Taft- Wanted to protect international governments friendly to American economic interest. He believed that economic intervention was better than military intervention to spread American influence. His foreign policy became known as Dollar Diplomacy.

Wilson- Long term impacts include democracy, open markets, American mission to instruct and influence the world, and willingness to intervene abroad to promote American ideals
