The period of reconstruction happened right after the Civil War ended. Abraham Lincoln felt that there is a need to unite the nation, So he started planning for the reconstruction of the South. He was of the view that slavery should be prohibited.

The government enacted the black codes in return. They have to sign the labor contract on a yearly base. African Americans resisted this idea. Johnson rejected the civil bill. His stubborn behavior ruptured the relation with Congress.

The 2nd phase was Radical Reconstruction, in which voters renounced the policies of Johnson. The Reconstruction Acts South divided into five military districts, disregard of color and race. In 1870 all states were under the control of the Republication party. Carpetbaggers and  Scalawags made the Republican.

Reconstruction helped the blacks restore their values and religion and helped them make secure between their families. Ku Klux Klan was a terrorist organization assassinated by the people asking for their rights against the whites. In 1871 administration took legal action against this organization.
