The Battle of Stalingrad will always be remembered as a standout battle in WWII due to its very brutal nature. It is estimated that the Soviet Union lost more men in this battle than the United States did in the entire war.

Stalin in this battle refused to concede the city of Stalingrad and issued an order effectively terming retreat as treason. In the end though, the Soviets prevailed and it became a turning point in the war.

The Germans lost some 800,000 men in this battle along with some 23 generals. This was a huge blow to their numbers against an enemy fighting in their homeland with massive reserves of manpower.

After this battle, the Germans were largely on the defensive in Russia as the Soviets pushed forward. This Battle was thus the beginning of the German retreat from Russia.

Some believe this to be the first victory against the Germans in Russia but it is not. The Germans suffered their first defeat a year earlier in the Battle of Moscow.
