The US Supreme Court has ruled in many cases that have greatly affected the lives of American citizens. In 1896, Plessy v. Ferguson resulted in the decision that racial segregation in public places was in fact constitutional. In 1954, Brown v. Board of Education overturned that ruling. Citizens study these cases often because they are an example of the Supreme Court overturning an earlier ruling and because they were both landmark cases on their own.
