Viewpoints on Vaccines By: Todd Cotterman

Parents put their children in serious danger by not immunizing. The diseases we immunize against are not gone and they are still deadly. Even chicken pox, a seemingly innocent disease, can kill. Choosing not to immunize endangers sick children and infants who cannot receive shots. It also undermines the community immunity. Unvaccinated individuals make it easier for diseases to spread

Vaccines: A Parent’s Right to Choose
by: Janice Rowker

Physicians and government officials argue that parents who don’t vaccinate are putting their communities at risk. They attempt to scare us into conforming by reminding us of the polio outbreaks of the 1900s. The chances of a child contracting polio are slim, but the Centers for Disease Control reported that doctors diagnose 1 in 150 children with autism each year. This is a gamble many parents aren’t willing to take.

Although the two passages express opposing views, they both talk about how vaccinations affect community health. Which choice is a logical conclusion drawn from BOTH articles?
A)Polio might return to America if all children are not vaccinated.
B)People who don't vaccinate their children don't care about their communities.
C)People need to decide whether community or individual health is more important.
D)People should not insist that children get vaccinated for every childhood disease.

Why were chinese american immigrants frequently detained when trying to immigrate through angel island? the rules for immigration were stricter at this checkpoint due to health issues that were prevalent among asian populations at this time. the location of the island was difficult to reach, and ships to the mainland were often prevented from sailing more than once a week. immigration agents were notorious for asking immigrants confusing questions as a means of denying them entry. low wages caused a shortage of immigration officials, so many immigrants had to wait weeks or months before their applications were processed.
