While the Civil War did end slavery and challenge the morality of racism, white supremacy
persisted after 1865. Between the American Revolution and Civil War, most white Southerners
maintained slavery was a “positive good” and Northerners accepted it as a “necessary evil.” After
the Emancipation Proclamation, Thirteenth Amendment, and Civil War's conclusion, however,
more and more Americans recognized the evil of not only slavery, but racial discrimination in
general. The Reconstruction Amendments, along with other federal legislation, and the growth of
organizations like the NAACP and establishment of HBCUs like the Tuskegee Institute, reflected
this increasing tolerance. But the Civil War did not end all racism. White supremacist groups like
the Ku Klux Klan and White Citizens' Council not only disenfranchised African Americans, but
lynched thousands. Similarly, sharecropping kept Black Americans poor, if not in debt.
