The focus of the gov't after the civil war was reconstructing the U.S. Reconstruction's aim was to bring the South back into the Union while protecting the rights and safety of the newly freed slaves. At the end of the Civil War, there were nearly 4 million former slaves in the South. It was the hope of Reconstructionists that they could be integrated into the fabric of a free society.

the big stick policy was to still look powerful, and be nice at the same time. the big stick policy was also to countries who were at war, find peace with eachother.

the dollar diplomacy was to expand american business and get it to latin america, for that would be good for the economy.
