How did machiavelli's work influence political power in the western world

Machiavelli wrote a book titled "The Prince." In this book, he gives advice on to leaders, explains that there is no morality when governing (he even stated that it's better to be feared than loved), and he stressed the importance of the individual. This book is still commonly read today.
