One of his main goals was to destroy French settlements in the region. (C) England later established colonies in Georgia and North Carolina. In 1702 the English attacked St. Augustine again. They also destroyed Spanish missions in northern Florida. (D) In 1684, French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle traveled down the Mississippi River. La Salle named the immense territory he journeyed through "La Louisiane," and claimed it for France. La Salle's actions shocked Spain.
