Each group believed that the universe has three distinct parts, and their beliefs centered on a pursuit of harmony and balance. The tribes also shared similar social structures, as heritage was passed down in a matrilineal fashion. Tribes participated in similar ceremonies for marrying couples and celebrating relationships. Third, tribes shared forms of government; each tribe was ruled by a chiefdom that elected a leader. Finally, the tribes focused on similar economic activities. Tribes bartered in order to trade goods, and men and women had traditional roles in the economy.
