Between 1757 and 1770, approximately 1,000 Acadians migrated to Louisiana, an underdeveloped colony in which they hoped to reunite families divided during the dispersal, thereby reestablishing life as they had known it in Acadia. Sustained by this dream, Acadians in Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti), Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, sold the household articles they had carried into exile, as well as their few subsequent acquisitions, to secure passage aboard Louisiana-bound English merchant vessels . . . . Led by Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil, 193 Acadians departed the Nova Scotian capital in late November, changed ship at Saint-Domingue, and arrived at New Orleans in late February, 1765. The immigrants' impoverishment elicited genuine compassion among Louisiana's leading officials . . . [The] chief administrative officer [of the Spanish government in the colony] provided the immigrants, whose number by April, 1765, would grow to 231, with foodstuffs, tools, muskets, and building materials.
