Imperialism is the process of acquiring territories through the act of taking lands from neighboring areas. This process mainly involves the extension of the ruling power, authority over to the other territories and people.

This extension and dominion of other lands also involve the direct or indirect acquisition of the lands of those territories. The acquisition of power again involves control over the economic and political spheres of the lands that are taken in. Thus, the process when smaller nations are taken in by larger nations is known as imperialism.
