"The treason of the senate" by David Graham Phillips was an example of a Muckraking source produced during the progressive era. Treason is a strong word, but not too strong, rather too weak, to characterize the situation which the senate is the eager, resourceful agent of interest as hostile to the american people as any invading army could be, and vastly more dangerous; interests that manipulate the prosperity produced by all, so that it heaps up riches for the few; interests whose growth and power can only mean the degradation of the people , of the educated into the sycophants, of the masses towards serfdom.
The senators are not elected by the people, they are elected by the "interests". A servant obeys him who can punish and dismiss. Except in extreme and rare and negligible instances can the people either elect or dismiss a senator?

Which best describes the argument presented in Source 1?
A) The senate successfully balances power between the branches of government

B)The process used to elect the senate has led to it protecting itself from uneducated voters

C)the process used to elect the senate has led to it looking out for wealthy interests

D) The senate successfully balances power between the branches of government
