Later, when John Dawson discovered coal, he sold the land that became the coal town of Dawson. When gold was discovered on the Maxwell grant and thousands of prospectors swarmed in, Maxwell decided to let them stay and create a town, which Maxwell named Elizabethtown, after his daughter.
