What was African Americans efforts to rebuild society?

The Reconstruction was the name given to the process by which society and government in the South were rebuilt after the civil war. African-Americans that were elected to the office sometimes felt insecurity and pressure because they felt that all the eyes were on them and that they had to prove that they were good at politics.
