Using an encyclopedia, the library, or the Internet, research the Battle of Saratoga. You will need to find at least two different sources on the topic. As you conduct your research, you will want to keep your research question in mind: What significance did the Battle of Saratoga have on the Continental Army and the colonies?

After you find your two sources, read them closely. If possible, use a highlighter to highlight key points and ideas. You should be looking for key points that will help you develop your answer to the research question, also known as your claim.

Once you have reviewed your sources and have an idea of your claim, meet with a small group of peers to discuss. When planning an argument essay, it is beneficial to hear other ideas and viewpoints on the topic. Each member of your discussion group should bring their sources and claim to the discussion. Be prepared to hear opposing viewpoints, which are also known as counterclaims. As a discussion participant, it is important to be respectful and open-minded. A peer may bring up an idea you hadn't thought of previously, which could lead to you changing your mind or strengthening your claim.

Make sure all members of the discussion take turns sharing their ideas. It may be helpful to pick one person to be the "discussion referee" to make sure that all participants stay focused and respectful. There should also be one member of the group that takes notes on the discussion, so that everyone can have a reference for what was discussed.
