During the fourteenth century, the Catholic Church faced many challenges. Their authority was question by John Wycliffe, this was one of the challenges the Catholic Church faced. He also questioned the people's authority who claimed to work there. He did not believe that they deserved the power in which the Catholic Church held. The church called for John Wycliffe to be arrested. The Church succeeded in arresting John Wycliffe followers, but he was protected in England by powerful individuals, the Duke of Lancaster and Queen Joan. Then when Pope Gregory XI's died, there was a Great Schism. The French Catholics and Italian Catholics wanted different Popes. Both parties elected their own pope. This conflicts what caused the decreasing power within the Church.
