The medieval Catholic church

Before the Reformation, all Christians living in Western Europe were part of the Roman Catholic Church. This was led by the Pope, based in Rome. The Church was extremely rich and powerful. In church, services were held in Latin.

Martin Luther considered them wrong because he believed that people could go to heaven by just having faith in God. As long as you believed in God, you did not need to buy indulgences from the Church. He thought that the Church was wrong for making a business out of granting forgiveness.
