Why was the Patriot cause near collapse at the beginning of the war?

The patriot cause was near collapse as the Continental Army dwindled in size (terms up and deserters). Thomas Paine wrote Crisis during the low point in the war. He stated that the harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph.
