The Declaration of Independence was a summarization of all of the grievances against England, as well as an official declaration of freedom against England. In doing so, the document declared the colonies an independent nation. This allowed the colonists to secure alliances with the French Government as well as obtain assistance from the French, and many others, against Great Britain. On a more domestic front, the Declaration of Independence united the colonists under one cause and gave them something to fight for. Many colonists actually took up arms because of the Declaration of Independence and what it meant for the colonists.
