The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American fighter pilots. They served with distinction in World War II despite bigotry and racism at home. In March 2007, Congress awarded the airmen one of the nation's highest
honors. President Bush joined congressional leaders in presenting the veterans with the Congressional Gold
Medal. The medal is the highest civilian award that Congress can bestow. It is given to any individual who
performs an outstanding act of service for the security and welfare of the United States. "We are so overjoyed,"
said retired captain Roscoe Brown Jr. He and five other airmen accepted the medal for the group.
