After the French and Indian war ended in 1763 a peace treaty was signed in Paris according to which Britain gained control over Canada and other areas. Still, the Proclamation line made it clear that the colonists are prohibited from settling the lands that were once French, thus discouraging them from settling towards the west. The line was created along the Appalachian Mountains .
