Why was the city of Nanjing extremely vulnerable to Japanese attack?

As the Japanese moved towards the city of Nanking, the Chinese forces got weaker. The Chinese leader, removed the Chinese armed forces from the city of Nanking, which left the people of the city vulnerable to the Japanese attack. The Chinese Army was called off and the Japanese Army occupied the city.
