During Jose Rizal's lifetime, the Catholic Church was a powerful force in the Philippines, and its power was tied to the Spanish colonial government. Because of this, some of Rizal's writing was anti-Catholic. In 1935, a controversial retraction letter was discovered by a Catholic priest and was supposedly written by Rizal just before his execution, stating that he retracted any of his writing that contradicts the Catholic faith. On one hand, eleven eyewitnesses attest to the letter's authenticity, and it is reasonable to believe Rizal would rethink his faith right before his death. However, the length of time that had passed before the letter's writing make it of dubious authenticity. It is unlikely that historians will come to an agreement on whether Rizal actually wrote his retraction letter. This retraction has generally not affected Rizal's public image in the Philippines. Those believing in the Retraction hold that the letter redeems some of Rizal's anti-Catholic sentiments while those believing that the letter is a forgery view Rizal in a continuous heroic image.
