The Farmers’ Alliance was an American agrarian movement that came up during the 1870s with the aim of improving the economic conditions of the American farmers at that time, through the formation of political advocacy and cooperatives.  

Populist Party emerged from the Farmers’ Alliance and they fielded James B. Weaver and James G. Field in the 1892 presidential election. During the 1896 election, tensions arose between fusionists that wanted to nominate what was to be a joint presidential ticket with the Democratic Party.  

The party suffered a nationwide collapse after the 1986 presidential election and other presidential candidates they later nominated after the 1986 election never came close to the performance of James B. Weaver in 1892.
