There were many cultural beliefs like Manifest Destiny that basically led to the United States wanting to gain lots more land since they thought that that was their destiny. One example of this is the annexation of Texas. While many opposed it because they feared a war with Mexico many praised the idea of manifest destiny and the idea that the United States had to conquer all regions. There were also many economic interests that led to territorial expansion in the United States. One example of this is that many Northerners wanted for Kansas and Nebraska to be territory since that would mean land for farms and people like Stephen Douglas that wanted to build a Transcontinental Railroad with an ending in Chicago.
