Prohibition refers to a period of time in America's history when the production, sale, and transport of alcoholic beverages was illegal. The Great Gatsby was set in the 1920s, when this law was in force. The law did not curtail the drinking of the characters in the story; drinking was part of the privileged lifestyle.
