The second amendment protects the right of people to keep and bear arms. you may be asking, well why specifically is the second amendment important? Asked or not, you should know all your amendments but for now, I'll explain why this one is important.

Knowing all the amendments is great to know. If the government does something that breaks a rule then you would know and could protest. It is also important to know that owning a gun is a right for people.

Let me show you how the quote by Thomas Jefferson could be put into play. If the government were to say "I have great power listen to me or die", then people can take action, but only in self-defense of course. Not all the power is handed over to the government, in fact, people have rights and power as well.
