Read the excerpt from “W. E.B. Du Bois: Social Justice Leader.” Society saw Du Bois as an agitator constantly fighting for his beliefs, but also, in the view of some, causing trouble. His ideas were revolutionary for his time. His view of social justice extended worldwide and to many different groups. For instance, he was extremely vocal in his support of women’s rights. There was also great injustice abroad. European countries controlled parts of Africa and its wealth. Du Bois fought for the political, social, and economic liberation of Africa. To support his cause, he went to London for the First Pan-African Conference in 1900 and organized similar gatherings around the world from 1919 to 1927. These groups passed resolutions against the oppression of Africans by European governments, but there was little change.
