During the Reconstruction, Congress granted African American men the status and rights of citizenship, including the right to vote, as guaranteed by the 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Reconstruction proved to be a mixed bag for Southerners. On the positive side, African Americans experienced rights and freedoms they had never possessed before. They could vote, own property, receive an education, legally marry and sign contracts, file lawsuits, and even hold political office. The south still declined to treat blacks equally after reconstruction. Things like The Black Codes and the Jim Crow Laws kept blacks beneath them, even if they weren't legally supported.  Positive changes accomplished by Reconstruction were diminished over time because some people still refused to treat Blacks equally. This caused a difficulty in enforcing the new laws.The Compromise of 1876 effectively ended the Reconstruction era. Southern Democrats' promises to protect civil and political rights of blacks were not kept, and the end of federal interference in southern affairs led to widespread disenfranchisement of blacks voters.
