Santa Anna began his rise to power in the military. He learned his war tactics early. At the Battle of Medina in 1813, the Spanish general Joaquín de Arredondo defeated a filibuster army in Texas rebelling against Spanish rule. Arredondo took no prisoners. Instead, he had them executed. Santa Ana would later use this harsh tactic in the Texas Revolution.
