It will be noticed that the Code of Hammurabi deals with the rights and duties of the subjects and is designed to punish crime, enforce the performance of contracts and obligations, regulate marriages, divorces, the
inheritance of property and the wages of laborers. Although it mentions the temple and palace it does not
purport to regulate either the religious establishment or the system of taxation.
