Different women and religious groups championed the cause for the prohibition and the Eighteenth Amendment of the constitution came into effect in 1920, to support the prohibition.

All these contributed to the increase in organised crimes what was witnessed. The illegal distillation and sale of alcoholic beverages was seen in many areas.
