Benjamin Franklin had for years from the French and Indian war up until that point in the American Revolution campaigned for American unity in facing threats and now that they were to sign the Declaration of Independence, he made sure to mention the importance again.

In saying the above he meant that if the American colonies did not stand together, they would be defeated by the British and a lot of them tried and executed for treason. It was therefore wise to unite and sign the Declaration and fight as one or lose individually.
