I write you this letter as it may be my last. We sit at Fort Griffin, at the outlet of two rivers as they pour into the Gulf of Mexico. Our job is to prevent the Union
general Franklin and his troops from capturing Houston and Beaumont. Alas,
there are only 40 of us. Our plan is to hold our fire as long as we can, luring the
Union boats in closer and then open fire with our cannons. If we can win, we
think we can restore morale.
