What methods did early civilizations use to maintain power?

The first civilisation appeared in locations where was easier to live, where resources were accessible. After some period, they began to establish rules to the group, as they were growing and resources were more easy to obtain, they settle, began a sedentary life, and formed larges societies, all this helped them to maintain power.
