No crop was so closely related to Mesoamerican life as corn, which spread from Canada to the Chilean pampas. Corn began to be cultivated in the Cholula valley, in what is now Puebla, around seven or eight thousand years ago, around 5000 BC.

The cultivation of plants could have been started purposefully, or by accident. The most important plant in ancient Mesoamerica, is, unarguably, maize. Squash and beans are also important staples of the ancient Mesoamerican agricultural diet and along with maize, are often referred to as the "Three Sisters".
